Overview

Our Client, who we work with on a monthly-retained basis, raised issues relating to an employee in our monthly catch-up meeting.  The employee had been absent for work due to sickness on five separate occasions over a 12 month period.  This had not been raised with them as being excessive.

Through our unlimited telephone advice service, guidance was provided as to how to deal with this case.

The employer had a robust attendance management process in place, which we had written and implemented within the organisation.  However, this had not been used and as a result the employee was unaware that her absence levels were of unsustainable levels.

We recommended a review meeting with the employee, which we also attended.  We discussed the absences and reasons, to identify patterns or any underlying conditions which would cause a high absence rate.

We then instigated the first formal stage of their process; an absence review hearing.  At this meeting a written warning was issued and the employee was told this would be repeated with further sanctions if their absence continued to be an issue.  The employee was absent twice more following this hearing; a final hearing was facilitated and she was dismissed from her role.
